This architecture provides a significant speed improvement over using the built-in PDF conversion engine. We called this engine the PDF engine, so named because it can do the same tasks as the PDF converter, but in a way that is faster, simpler, and more natural. We have developed a powerful PDF processing engine that uses Java to optimize a set of transformation methods, so that the process of creating PDF images can be substantially faster than with the built-in PDF converter. When a PDF can't be directly converted to an image, it can be converted to a series of smaller images, or its image data can be stored in a database a database can be used to store the PDF image data instead of having to convert the file to an image at every step of the process. The second way of producing PDFs with an image is to use an external PDF file (the “PDF encoder”), which is an engine that can be used to read a PDF and convert it to an image file and save the result to another PDF file. The first method is the built-in PDF conversion engine, which is optimized for converting documents such as images, PDF files, DOCX documents, or Microsoft Office documents to PDF. The current format factory JPG engine supports two methods for making PDFs of large images, both of which are quite slow.
